Extra Gentle Care for Their Gums and Teeth

Just like adults, children should see their dentist regularly. Routine cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining their oral health and supporting the healthy development of their smile. Cleanings help remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cause cavities, gum disease, and bad breath—while also ensuring their adult teeth come in strong and healthy. A kid-friendly hygienist is specially trained to clean those hard-to-reach places children may miss at home.

Following a thorough cleaning, the dentist and hygienist will evaluate your child’s overall oral health, check in on the progress of baby and adult teeth, and look for signs of early concerns. We’ll offer tips for at-home care tailored to your child’s unique needs.

    Routine Pediatric Cleanings Help:
  • Keep baby and adult teeth strong and healthy
  • Prevent cavities and gum disease
  • Track developmental milestones as teeth grow and change
  • Foster a positive experience with dental visits
  • Empower kids to care for their own oral health
  • Build lifelong habits for healthy teeth

What Happens During a Children’s Teeth Cleaning?

We’ll start by reviewing your child’s chart and history to spot any recurring concerns or new patterns. We may recommend taking X-rays or suggest fluoride treatment or dental sealants, especially for newly erupted adult teeth. We always speak in age-appropriate, comforting language to help your child feel safe and welcome—and we encourage them to share their thoughts or ask questions.

Gum Health

Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth—especially when adult teeth are coming in. Children are just as susceptible to gum disease as adults, so we check their gums closely. If needed, we’ll give age-appropriate advice on flossing and gum care at home.

Plaque & Tartar Removal

Plaque is a soft, sticky buildup that forms on teeth every day. If it isn’t removed regularly, it hardens into tartar, which is tougher to remove and can lead to cavities. A hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar from teeth and around the gumline. We may recommend a fluoride treatment afterward to help strengthen enamel and prevent decay.

Monitoring Milestones

The dentist will examine your child’s mouth, review any new X-rays, and look out for developmental markers. Children begin getting their first teeth around 6 months and continue developing their permanent smile into their teenage years (and even later for wisdom teeth). We’ll monitor your child’s unique dental progress and address any concerns early on.

Cost of Pediatric Teeth Cleaning and Exam in Mississauga

Routine cleanings and exams are so effective in preventing dental issues that most insurance plans cover them in full or at a low cost. With insurance, you may pay between $0 and $50 per visit. Without insurance, you can expect to pay between $120 and $300+, especially for initial or long-overdue visits.

    What influences cost?
  • Current oral health status
  • Whether new X-rays are needed
  • Whether fluoride or sealants are added
  • The time and care needed during the appointment
  • Any supplies required to meet your child’s needs

If you’d like an accurate, itemized estimate, we’d be happy to provide one after a consultation. Early and routine care is one of the most powerful ways to prevent serious and costly dental issues later on.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend a cleaning and checkup every 6 months, just like adults. Some children may benefit from visits every 3 to 4 months, depending on their dental health.

Don’t wait. If your child is in pain, showing signs of discomfort, or if you have concerns about their teeth, it’s best to book an appointment as soon as possible.

Look for signs like:

  • Constantly touching their face or teeth
  • Flinching when someone goes near their mouth
  • Swelling or redness in the gums or cheeks
  • Avoiding cold/hot foods, or chewing on only one side
  • Irritability or changes in eating habits
  • Fever, in cases of infection

Most cleanings take 30 to 60 minutes. Appointments may take longer for children who are anxious or ask a lot of questions (which we always welcome!).

  • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears
  • Use a child-friendly toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Teach brushing twice a day and supervise young children
  • Request fluoride treatments during checkups
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially before bed
  • Be a role model—brush and floss together!

We recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after fluoride treatment before your child eats or drinks. This gives the fluoride time to fully absorb into the enamel for maximum benefit.
