A Lifetime of Smiles Starts with a Good Foundation
Help your kids start their oral health journey on the right foot by building strong, positive habits early on. We understand that family care can be both rewarding and challenging, and children need extra special consideration. A healthy smile is a key part of childhood development, so let’s get them started with personalized guidance that supports their individual needs.
Getting Ready for Your First Appointment
Talk to your child about their upcoming trip to the dentist to help them feel more at ease. The main goal of their first visit is to relax, have fun, and begin building a positive relationship with the dentist. It’s natural for kids to feel nervous, but here’s what they can expect during their first appointment:
Talk and Listen
We will take the time to talk with both you and your child. We’ll explain what we’ll be doing during the visit, why it’s important, and introduce some of the tools we use. Using kid-friendly language, we’ll ensure your child feels comfortable and assured. After all, we’re here to make it an enjoyable experience, not something to be afraid of!
Gently Examine
We will perform a gentle examination of your child’s gums, tongue, teeth, and overall oral health. The exam helps us identify any areas that may need extra attention, whether it’s due to early signs of dental issues or areas that need more care at home. We’ll provide personalized guidance and make a note of those areas to keep an eye on in future visits.
Educate
As part of the visit, we might ask your child to show us how they brush their teeth. We’ll provide gentle, helpful instructions on how to improve their brushing habits. We’re always happy to answer any questions you or your child may have about maintaining good oral health.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your child will begin to cut their first teeth around 6 months of age, and it’s recommended to bring them to the dentist by their first birthday or within 6 months of getting their first tooth. If you notice any signs of discomfort or suspect something may be wrong, it’s important to book an appointment as soon as possible. It’s never too early for your child’s first dental visit!
Baby teeth play a critical role in your child’s oral health and development. Beyond holding space for permanent teeth, they impact your child’s smile, facial appearance, and overall confidence. Children who have healthy, pain-free baby teeth are more likely to develop positive dental habits that last a lifetime. Even mild dental pain can negatively affect your child’s eating habits, including how they chew and what foods they prefer.
The length of the first appointment will depend on your child’s needs and how cooperative they feel during the exam. On average, an appointment typically lasts about one hour.
After their first appointment, your child should visit the dentist regularly, just like adults. We recommend a checkup and cleaning every 6 months, unless otherwise advised. If your child is experiencing tooth or jaw pain, frequently rubbing or nursing their jaw, or avoiding hard or cold foods, schedule an appointment sooner.
Your child’s mouth is more than just their teeth—it’s a complex system that includes their gums, tongue, cheeks, glands, bone, and more. When one part of this system is unhealthy, it can affect the rest of the mouth. Swollen, itchy, sore, or bleeding gums can be early signs of a more serious issue. Taking care of gum health now helps prevent complications down the road.
