Make Teeth Look and Feel Natural Again

Dental fillings are among the most common procedures we perform in our practice. They help repair and restore teeth, preventing the progression of decay or infections that could require more extensive treatment later. We use composite resin fillings, which are custom-matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Unlike amalgam (metal fillings), tooth-coloured composite resin bonds effectively to your tooth, allowing us to fill even the smallest cavities with minimal drilling.

Make Teeth Look and Feel Natural Again

Getting a filling might seem like a small task, and it’s tempting to delay treatment, especially if your tooth doesn’t hurt yet. However, here’s why filling cavities promptly is crucial:

  • Stop cavities from growing: If left untreated, cavities can worsen, causing greater damage.
  • Prevent infections or abscesses: A filling helps avoid painful dental infections.
  • Restore tooth strength: Cavities can weaken your tooth, but a filling restores its strength and integrity.
  • Save money long-term: Addressing a small cavity now is far more cost-effective than dealing with more extensive issues later.
  • Reduce sensitivity: Fillings can help alleviate discomfort from hot and cold stimuli.
  • Preserve your smile: Fillings protect your natural smile and prevent further damage.

How Is a Cavity Filled?

Gentle Freezing

We begin by numbing the gums surrounding the affected area to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. We understand that the thought of this step can cause some anxiety, but the freezing ensures you won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.

Filling the Tooth

Once you’re numb, the cavity is carefully cleaned and prepped. We apply an adhesive gel to the tooth, then mould a composite resin (the white filling material) to match the contours of your tooth and your bite.

Curing the Composite

The resin is then hardened with a special LED light. Afterward, the dentist carefully inspects the filled tooth, making any adjustments as needed, and finishes with a final polish to restore the tooth’s smooth, natural appearance.

The Cost of a Filling in Mississauga

Fillings are a common and effective way to prevent future dental issues, and most insurance plans provide significant coverage for this procedure. Depending on your plan, you might pay anywhere from $0 to $100+ for a filling. If you don’t have dental insurance, the cost typically ranges from $120 to $300 or more, especially if multiple fillings are required.

Several factors influence the cost of your treatment:
  • Current oral health: Your overall dental condition will impact the procedure.
  • Number of fillings needed: More fillings may result in a higher cost.
  • Cavity location: The location of the cavity in your mouth can affect treatment complexity.
  • Need for x-rays: Additional diagnostic images may increase costs.
  • Time required by the dental team: The amount of time needed for the procedure can influence the cost.
  • Equipment and supplies: The materials and tools necessary for the procedure also factor into the pricing.

We prioritize filling cavities promptly to avoid the need for more invasive treatments, alleviate dental pain, and ensure you stay healthy and satisfied with your dental care.

Frequently Asked Questions

With good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and routine checkups, your fillings should last for more than ten years.

In the past, dental fillings were often made from an alloy called “dental amalgam,” which is commonly referred to as silver or mercury fillings. While there has been some debate about the safety of amalgam fillings, the Canadian Dental Association states that scientific studies have not found any conclusive evidence linking amalgam fillings to illness in the general population. So, if you have silver fillings, there’s no need for concern!

It’s not recommended to use a homemade tooth filling. Over-the-counter temporary filling products can help until you see a dentist, but they’re not a permanent fix. A professional dental filling is necessary to properly treat a cavity and prevent further damage, such as tooth loss or abscesses.

For dental pain from a cavity, apply a cold compress to the painful area for temporary relief. You can also take pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, following the recommended dosage. If the pain is severe and disrupts your daily activities or sleep, consider it a dental emergency and contact a dentist immediately for guidance and an urgent appointment.
